iSteam - the latest in a long line of wacky iPhone apps - adds steam to your touchscreen when you blow on your iPhone's microphone! Once your handset is all steamed up, you can use your fingers to wipe it clean...and, as you do so, you'll be treated to realistic squeaking sounds, condensation, and droplets that run in the direction dictated by the orientation of your phone!

This ad campaign from Rethink in Vancouver for D&M Publishers, an independent publishing house in Canada, might be a tad too clever for its own good. See the three full ads here. Or maybe the approach is spot-on, considering the target audience of presumably brainy readers who don't mind working an extra beat to take in the ads' subtly mind-blowing message. Either way, it's somewhat amusing that the ads rely entirely on visuals to make their point—an unintentionally ironic nod, [...]

by Laura Neilson I know I'm not alone in my love for grocery shopping in foreign countries. It's a great way to get a sense of a country's consumer culture—not just by seeing what the people of that country buy, but also the particular ways that all the product are packaged and displayed. But what exactly does an Austrian MPREIS grocery store, self-dubbed "The Seriously Sexy Supermarket" sell? The same things as any other local supermarket, only in a seriously cool [...]

Timing is everything. Take Flickr for example, a photo sharing service that successfully emerged in 2004 not just because of good design, technology, and leadership, but because of the coincidental mass adoption of camera phones and affordable high-quality digital cameras. A good idea becomes a great idea if its time has come. So as we start off in a gloomy looking 2009, I’ll put on my hunch-hat and share my nine ideas of experiences who’s time has come: Enabling behavior change [...]

Since it’s a new year, I thought I’d post some shiny things. Mirrors, that is. This art deco mirror is a nice entryway piece, or even in a shiny Hollywood glamour-style bath. http://www.westelm.com The facets of this mirror make a great focal point in any room, and its size of 40” x 40” reinforces its bold statement. http://www.grahamandgreen.co.uk Frilly isn’t my type. However, the elegance from a mirror such as this Filipa mirror, creates a the perfect juxtaposition in a modern [...]

For the past month I’ve been adding sites (and commentary) to Coudal Partners’ Fresh Signals under the name MST. I have to admit that I did feel a bit of pressure to submit as their audience is pretty big and discerning. I tried to keep the same mantra that I use for my own Link Drops which is to present stuff that I find interesting that’s just slightly outside the norm for a design blog. The only difference being for [...]

A few weeks ago I did a wallpaper for the Abduzeedo's second anniversary. It had a very 80's style from the colors to the theme that, of course, was space. In that image we had a sort of A of light, some nebulas and more rays of light. I did everything in Photoshop CS4. So, in this tutorial I will show you how I created that image in Photoshop, it's really simple and it uses some tricks from other tutorials such [...]

Side projects are the small businesses of the web — the little projects people put their blood, sweat & tears into. Many side projects downright fail, some succeed wildly, and the rest just kind of sit there. I’ve been launching my own little side projects since early 2004 (and trying to create them since around 2000). I’ve had a wide range of successes and failures profit-wise making up 4%-25% of my yearly income. Snook was talking on twitter about this post [...]

I spent December of 2008 in mixed states of both reflection and eager anticipation. I realize our economy is in shambles, and optimistic may not be the most popular word these days, but it’s hard for me not to be excited about things to come. 2008 Was Pretty Awesome Just days before sticking a fork in 2007, my daughter was born, and a month previous, my wife quit her day job for good. What was to follow was both the [...]

I love that youtube makes this all possible, that two guys can make a funny parody and film it and upload it and no one in the NBC/SNL/LonelyIsland mix are copyright crazies that would pull it offline, and thousands more people can enjoy it. So great.
